Neither material wins the whole boat. Marine vinyl is the correct specification for anything exposed to sun, salt and standing water — cockpit seating, flybridge, swim platform. Genuine leather belongs in the dry, climate-controlled interior, where it outperforms every synthetic on feel, repairability and how it ages. Specifying by zone rather than by material is what separates an interior that still looks right in year eight from one that gets re-trimmed in year three.
Why does the comparison usually get framed dishonestly?
Because almost everyone writing it sells one of the two. Search the term and you get vinyl mills explaining that vinyl is superior, or leather houses claiming their hides survive anything. Both positions are commercially convenient and technically wrong.

Where does each material actually fail?
Failure mode is the useful lens, not a feature list. Every one of these materials has a known way of dying.

Two lines drive most real-world disputes. The first is PU hydrolysis: a PU-coated “leather look” in a permanently humid cabin can delaminate inside two or three years, and it fails ugly — sticky, then flaking. The second is repairability: leather is the only one of the four a trimmer can locally recolour or patch. On a boat where a single seating group is a five-figure trim job, that column is worth more than any abrasion number.
What should a marine-grade leather actually pass?
“Marine grade” is not a protected term, so ask for the test report rather than the adjective. A hide specified for a yacht interior should carry, at minimum:
- Hydrolysis resistance — the single most relevant test for a closed, humid cabin.
- Light fastness — target Blue Wool 5–6 for interiors that get indirect sun through saloon glazing.
- Salt spray / mildew resistance — relevant even inside, because the air is never dry.
- Abrasion — 50,000+ Martindale cycles for seating; higher for helm and high-traffic settees.
- Low fogging — matters in enclosed cabins; a finish that outgasses films the windscreen.
- Flame behaviour — to the classification your yard's build standard requires.

How should you split the boat by zone?
This is the specification we recommend to yards, and the one we follow when we quote:
- Cockpit, flybridge, exterior seating, swim platform: marine vinyl or a silicone-based synthetic. Do not put leather here, treated or otherwise. Standing water and direct UV will win.
- Wet-adjacent interior — galley seating, heads, crew mess: vinyl or a heavily finished pigmented leather. Cleanability beats hand feel in these spaces.
- Saloon, master and guest cabins, dining, headliners, wall panels: genuine leather. This is where the material earns its price — hand feel, acoustic damping, the way a full-grain hide takes light, and the fact that it can be repaired rather than replaced.
- Owner's details — helm wheel wrap, handrails, key trays, folios, tender kit: leather, always. Small pieces, high perceived value, and the part of the boat the owner touches every day.

Does the sustainability argument change the answer?
It changes the conversation with the owner, not the engineering. Marine vinyl is a petrochemical product that cannot be repaired and is generally not recycled at end of life; it goes into the skip with the foam. Leather is a by-product of the meat industry, is repairable, and — if the tannery is certified — is traceable back through the supply chain.
That last condition does the work. An uncertified hide with no traceability makes a weaker claim than good vinyl. Commercial context matters too: refit and interior work is where the money in this market sits, and Spain — Palma and Barcelona in particular — handles a significant share of European refits above 30 m. FAQ
Can leather be used on an exposed helm seat if it is treated?
We advise against it. Coated and marine-treated leathers survive spray and occasional wetting, but standing water plus direct UV is a different exposure. If the design demands the look outdoors, use a silicone or high-spec vinyl for the seat and put real leather on the wheel wrap and handrails, which are shaded and get replaced on a shorter cycle anyway.
How much more does a leather interior cost than vinyl?
Material cost is the smaller part. Expect a meaningful premium per square metre, but the trim labour is broadly comparable and the lifecycle changes the maths: a leather saloon that is recoloured once at year ten can outlast two full vinyl re-trims. Ask your trimmer to quote both on a 15-year basis, not on material price.
What about hide size and batch continuity on a large interior?
This is the practical constraint people forget. A saloon may need consistent shade across many square metres, so the hides must come from one tanning batch, and a refit six months later needs that batch reproduced. Ask the tannery in writing whether they can reserve or reproduce the lot — an origin tannery can, a stockist reselling other people's leather usually cannot.
Is silicone leather a genuine alternative for interiors?
For wet-adjacent zones, increasingly yes: it solves the hydrolysis problem that kills PU. For the saloon and cabins, it still reads as a synthetic to a buyer at that price point, and it is not repairable. Treat it as a better vinyl, not as a leather substitute.
