Embossed leather: types, croc and snake effects, and how to specify it

Embossed leather carries a pattern pressed into its surface: crocodile, snake, saffiano, pebble. The pattern is an effect added to a base leather, so the base and the finish decide how it behaves in use.

Embossed leather is leather whose surface has been pressed with a heated plate or roller to imprint a pattern. The pattern can imitate an exotic skin, such as crocodile or snake, or be a decorative texture such as saffiano, pebble or lychee.

What is embossed leather?

Embossing presses an engraved plate or roller into the leather under heat and pressure, so the grain surface takes the shape of the pattern. Most embossed leather is made on a corrected-grain base, because the original grain is lightly sanded first and the pattern then covers it. Common embossed patterns

Croc embossed leather: an imitation of crocodile or alligator scales. Very common in handbags, belts and dress shoes.
Snake embossed leather: a python or snake scale pattern, usually smaller and denser than croc.
Saffiano: a fine cross-hatch texture. It is hard-wearing and easy to wipe clean.
Pebble and lychee: a soft, irregular grain that hides scratches and imitates a natural grain.
Lizard, ostrich and others: exotic-skin imitations made with the same process.

Embossed vs printed leather

An embossed pattern has relief: you can feel it. A printed pattern is applied as colour on a flat or lightly textured surface, so it shows the design but has little or no depth. Many animal-print leathers combine both: a print for the colour and an emboss for the relief. Printed leather is cheaper to change between seasons, since the pattern is a print and not a metal plate; embossing gives a more convincing result up close.

What to check before you order

The base leather: the pattern is only an effect on top, so the quality of the hide underneath determines strength. See full grain, corrected grain and split.
Depth of the emboss: a deep pattern looks more convincing but puts more stress on the surface when the leather flexes, for example at the toe of a shoe.
The finish layer: in footwear the finish can crack along the creases of a deep pattern. Ask the tannery for a flex test on the exact article, and test it on your last or pattern.
Thickness and animal: goat, calf and cow take an emboss differently. Check the article sheet for thickness and ask for a swatch.

How to specify embossed leather

Name the pattern and its scale, the base leather (animal and thickness), the colour, and the end use. For a product that flexes hard, such as a shoe upper, ask for the finish and the flex behaviour of the specific article. The simplest check is to request a swatch and flex it by hand.
