Low minimum order leather supplier: leather for brands of every size

High minimums are the first wall an emerging brand hits — and "no minimum order" is now the first thing every supplier says. Here is the checklist that separates the claim from the service, and how we answer it.

A guide by TL San Martín, a tannery of origin in Elda (Alicante, Spain) since 1995, LWG Gold certified under the Leather Manufacturer standard — the only standard where a Gold medal exists.

Yes — and at TL San Martín there is no minimum order at all. You can buy a single hide of any article in the library, in stock colours or in a colour developed to your Pantone. We tan and finish in our own plant in Elda, so the colour setup is our cost to carry rather than a quantity you have to clear: production runs 1–2 weeks, a Pantone colour development 1–2 weeks, physical samples 1–2 weeks. Same material, same LWG Gold certification, at whatever scale you need.

The problem with high minimums

Many large warehouses and tanneries set industrial minimums: hundreds or thousands of feet per colour. For a small brand or a capsule, that ties up capital or forces you to drop the leather you wanted. The fix isn't lower quality — it's a supplier that works at your scale.

The detail that catches most new brands out is that the minimum is rarely one number. Three different limits travel under the same name:

TermWhat it meansWhere it bites
Order MOQMinimum for the order as a whole, across articlesThe one that gets advertised; rarely the binding one
Colour MOQMinimum for each colour of the articleThe one that actually kills a capsule — three colours means three minimums
Dye-lot minimumThe quantity below which the tannery cannot repeat your colourShows up on the reorder, not the first order

How much leather do I actually need for a short run?

Leather is bought by the hide, not by the metre. A finished bovine hide yields roughly 1–1.5 m² of usable area, and your real consumption depends on the cutting layout and the yield of your pattern. As a starting reference:

StageIndicative volumeWhat it coversWhat to order
Prototype1 single hidePhysical sample, colour and hand check, first patternStock article, card colour
Capsule / test~5 hidesShort run, pop-up, market validationStock article, 1–2 card colours
First productionTens of hidesSeason collection for an emerging brandCustom Pantone on an existing article
IndustrialHundreds or thousandsContinuous production, scheduled reordersArticle and colour developed to brief

None of these tiers is a minimum at TL San Martín — they are simply what brands typically buy at each stage. You can start at any of them, including the first.

"No minimum order": the four questions to ask

The phrase has become standard in leather listings, and it covers very different realities. A warehouse clearing stock and a tannery that will run a dye lot for you both write the same three words. Before you plan a collection around it, put these four questions to the supplier and ask for the answers in writing.

AskWhy it mattersOur answer
Is it stock only?"No minimum" on a warehouse list usually means whatever is on the shelf today. When that reference runs out, so does your article. The whole 135-article library, stock and made-to-order. We make the article, so it does not disappear when a shelf empties.
Does it apply to a new colour? This is where most no-minimum offers stop: a custom Pantone means a dye lot, and a dye lot usually means a minimum.Yes. We own the recipe and the finishing line in Elda, so a new colour is a setup we carry. Colour development to Pantone: 1–2 weeks.
Is there a surcharge?A minimum removed from the terms sometimes reappears as a small-lot fee, a cutting charge or a price break that only starts far above your quantity. We quote price per square metre against your article and your quantity, in writing, before you commit — so you see exactly what a small lot costs.
What is the real lead time?A small order that is accepted but scheduled behind the industrial ones is a minimum by other means.Production 1–2 weeks, physical samples 1–2 weeks. We schedule our own plant and do not depend on a third-party tannery or finisher for either.

Whoever you buy from, those four answers — in writing, against your article — are what turn "no minimum order" from a headline into a supply plan.

Frequently asked questions

Can I buy leather as a small brand?

Yes. At TL San Martín there is no minimum order: you can buy a single hide of any article in the library. Across the industry, minimums vary widely, so the question to ask a supplier is not whether they have a minimum but what their no-minimum offer actually covers.

What is the minimum order (MOQ) for leather?

It varies widely across the industry — from single hides per article to hundreds of feet per colour, because each colour is a separate dye lot with its own setup. Ours is none: no minimum per order, per article or per colour, stock and made-to-order alike.

A supplier says “no minimum order”. What should I check?

Four things. Is it stock only, or does it also cover made-to-order articles? Does it apply to a new colour developed to your Pantone, or only to colours already in the warehouse? Is there a surcharge or cutting fee that appears once the quantity is small? And what is the real lead time on a small lot — is it scheduled, or does it wait behind the large orders? At TL San Martín the answers are: the whole 135-article library, stock and made-to-order; yes, new Pantone colours included; price quoted per square metre in writing against your article and quantity before you commit; and 1–2 weeks for production, 1–2 weeks for a Pantone colour development, 1–2 weeks for physical samples.

Does no minimum order apply to a custom Pantone colour?

Yes. We tan and finish in our own plant in Elda and own the recipe, so a new colour is a setup we carry rather than a quantity you have to clear. Colour development to Pantone takes 1–2 weeks.

Is quality lower if I buy a small quantity?

No. You buy the exact same article, the same LWG Gold certified production and the same documentation as an industrial client; only the quantity changes, not the quality.

Is the minimum per order or per colour?

Across the industry this is the question that matters and almost nobody asks it. Many suppliers advertise a low order minimum but apply a separate minimum to each colour, so a three-colour capsule triples the real commitment. Ask for it in writing before you fix the article. At TL San Martín there is no minimum on either: not per order, not per article, not per colour.

How many hides do I need for a short run?

A finished bovine hide yields roughly 1–1.5 m² of usable area, so the number depends on your cutting layout and pattern yield. As a reference: 1 hide for a prototype and colour check, around 5 hides for a capsule or market test, and tens of hides for a first season production.

Will I be able to repeat the same colour next season?

Only if you buy from whoever makes it. Just the originating tannery can reproduce your exact colour months later, because it keeps the recipe and the process. A reseller depends on stock remaining from that same lot. We tan and finish in our own plant in Elda, so the recipe stays with us.
