Metallic leather: types, foil vs pigment, and what to check before you order
Metallic leather is leather with a shimmering metal-look finish: gold, silver, bronze, pewter or pearl. The effect sits in the finish layer, so durability depends on how that layer is built.
A guide by TL San Martín, a tannery of origin in Elda (Alicante, Spain) since 1995, LWG Gold certified under the Leather Manufacturer standard.
Metallic leather is leather finished with metallic pigments or foil to give a metal-like shine. The effect is in the finish layer on top of the leather, not in the hide itself.
What is metallic leather?
A metallic finish is applied over a base leather, in the same way as any other finish. It uses fine metallic or pearlescent pigments in the finish coat, or a thin foil layer, to reflect light. The base can be goat, calf, cow or sheep, smooth or embossed, and the same base can take a matt colour or a metallic one.
Types of metallic leather
- Pigment metallic: metallic pigment in the finish coat. It gives a soft sheen and usually flexes better than foil.
- Foil: a thin metal-look film applied to the surface. It has a stronger mirror effect and the film is more sensitive to flexing and scuffing.
- Pearlescent or nacre: a pearl-like, colour-shifting shimmer rather than a flat metal tone.
- Washed or distressed metallic: a metallic base with a worn, vintage appearance.
- Metallic on suede or embossed bases: the effect is added to a suede or a patterned surface, for a different texture. See boarded vs embossed grain.
Where metallic leather works
Women's and fashion footwear, handbags, small leather goods, belts and trims. It is a strong choice for the visible parts of a product that don't flex hard. For high-flex areas, ask the tannery how the specific article behaved in testing; see how the effect layer behaves under flex in animal print and metallic leather for barefoot sneakers.
What to check before you order
- Flex: the metallic layer can crack or lose its shine along creases. Flex a swatch by hand and ask for the tannery's test data on the article.
- Scuff and rub: metallic finishes show wear faster than a matt colour, especially at high-contact points.
- Colour consistency: metallic tones change with the light and the direction of the skin. Cut your pattern pieces in the same direction.
- Thickness: match it to the use. The article sheet lists the thickness.
How to specify metallic leather
Name the tone, the base leather and thickness, whether you want a smooth or a textured surface, and the use. Then request a swatch. You can request free leather samples from us and see the metallic effect on the actual hide.

Frequently asked questions
Is metallic leather real leather?
Yes. It is real leather with a metallic finish applied on top. The metal effect comes from pigments or a foil layer, not from metal inside the hide.
Does metallic leather crack?
The finish layer can crack or dull along creases if the leather flexes a lot. Pigment finishes usually flex better than foil. Ask for flex data on the specific article and test a swatch.
What is the difference between metallic and foil leather?
Metallic leather uses metallic pigments in the finish. Foil leather has a thin metal-look film applied to the surface, which gives a stronger mirror effect but is more sensitive to flexing and scuffing.
Can metallic leather be embossed?
Yes. A metallic finish can be applied over an embossed base, for example a croc or snake pattern, or over suede.
