Thermal padel bag in leather: spec the insulation

"Thermal" is a build decision with a thickness and a cost, not a word on a hangtag. Here is what the layer has to be before the claim survives a real afternoon in a parked car.

A thermal padel bag does not cool anything. It slows the rate at which the racket compartment reaches the temperature that damages the core — and that is the only claim you can defend. Industry guidance puts permanent damage to EVA and foam cores above roughly 55–60 °C, a range a parked car reaches in a Mediterranean summer.

If you are private-labelling a leather bag, that means three lines in the technical pack, not one word on the label.

What is actually happening to the racket inside the bag?

Three things, and only one of them is reversible.

None of this is exotic. It is the reason the thermal compartment became a standard category in padel retail, and the reason a club shop can sell one at a premium without explaining much.

What does "thermal" have to be, physically?

A closed compartment with an insulating layer and a reflective barrier. In a technical pack, that is three lines:

Two build notes decide whether the claim survives. First, the compartment has to be isolated from the vented shoe pocket — most padel bags put a mesh shoe compartment next to the racket, and it undoes the insulation. Second, an insulated panel cannot be stitched through without consequence: every seam that crosses the foam is a thermal bridge, so the insulated sleeve is built as a separate sewn cassette and then assembled into the bag, which adds an operation and roughly 8–14% to the make cost.

Does leather help or hurt here?

It helps, modestly, and for an unglamorous reason: mass and low thermal conductivity. A 1.4–1.8 mm finished hide is a slower conductor than a 600D polyester face, so the outer shell itself contributes — but the gain is small next to the reflective barrier, and anyone claiming leather alone makes a bag thermal is selling you something.

Where leather genuinely changes the product is durability and the shelf it sits on. A club shop that turns bags over every season buys synthetic. How does the thermal version change the order?

It moves the bag from "accessory" to "the one with a reason to exist", which is what a club shop actually needs.

There is no minimum on the leather itself — we cut what the run needs, and the run repeats. The constraint is the finished product: a thermal cassette is only worth tooling once the format is settled, so the sensible first move is one format, not three. Clubs and brands that want breadth get it by cutting several articles from the same batch — a bag, a single-racket cover, a grip wallet — which pushes hide yield from 60–70% to over 85% and is the only way the colours actually match across the line. Frequently asked questions

How long does a thermal compartment actually buy you?

It is a delay, not a barrier. With a 12–20 µm reflective barrier and 4 mm of closed-cell foam, you are slowing the climb, not stopping it. The honest instruction on the hangtag is the useful one: do not leave the bag in a parked car, and if you must, put it in the boot rather than on the seat.

Can you build the insulation into a single-racket cover instead?

Yes, and it is cheaper to tool, but the effect is weaker — a slim cover has less air volume to protect and more surface per racket. If the format matters more than the claim, build the cover; if the claim matters, build the compartment.

Does the aluminised barrier stop the bag being repairable?

No. The cassette is assembled as a separate unit, so it can be replaced without touching the leather shell. That is one of the reasons we build it that way rather than laminating the barrier to the lining.

Will the leather colour hold across a reorder a year later?

Only if the batch is reserved. Ask for a 12–24 month batch reservation at the time of the first order. Without it, a second run is a new batch and a visible difference in the same shop window.
