Chrome-free tanned leather vs chrome tanning: what's the difference?
How a hide is tanned shapes its properties, its sustainability profile and where it can be used. Here is chrome vs chrome-free, without the greenwashing.
Chrome tanning uses chromium(III) salts and is the world's most common method — fast, soft, versatile and economical. Chrome-free tanning replaces chromium with synthetic, aldehyde or vegetable agents, removing chrome from the finished product for a more controlled environmental profile. Neither is universally "better": chrome suits general footwear and goods; chrome-free is the standard where chrome isn't admissible — children's footwear, automotive, and sustainability-led brands.
What is chrome-free tanned leather?
Chrome-free tanned leather is leather stabilised without chromium salts — using glutaraldehyde ("wet-white"), synthetic tannins or vegetable extracts instead. The result contains no chromium at all, which simplifies REACH compliance, end-of-life handling and OEM specifications. For buyers, the label alone is not enough: the claim is only as good as the tannery behind it. An origin tannery working under an audited environmental system — such as our LWG Gold certification — can document the tannage, the chemistry and the lot-to-lot traceability that a reseller cannot.

Note on chrome-VI: hexavalent chromium is a banned by-product, not a tanning agent. Well-run chrome (chrome-III) tanning does not use or produce chrome-VI. San Martín does not use chrome-VI.
Why Cr(VI) matters for compliance
The risk buyers must manage is hexavalent chromium, Cr(VI), which can form during processing or ageing and is a skin sensitiser. Under Entry 47 of Annex XVII of the EU REACH Regulation, leather in contact with skin must not exceed 3 mg/kg of Cr(VI) — a limit in force since 1 May 2015. Pressure has only grown: settlements brokered by the US Center for Environmental Health pushed leather companies to eliminate hex chrome from skin-contact products by the end of 2025, with reformulation protocols applied at the tannery (CEH). Chrome-free leather sidesteps the whole category: no chromium in, no Cr(VI) to test for.

Chrome-free tanning often yields a pale "wet-white" hide that takes bright, clean colours well and handles heat better than chrome leather — useful for car cabins. The trade-offs to verify are fastness, hand feel and price.
What to check before sourcing it
- Tannage type — true chrome-free/metal-free vs. low-chrome. They are not interchangeable.
- Certification — a third-party chrome-free certificate or equivalent lab report backs the claim.
- Cr(VI) test report — even on chrome-free, a report at the REACH 3 mg/kg threshold reassures downstream customers.
- Performance data — rub/colour fastness, tensile and tear strength for the intended use.
- Origin & consistency — an origin tannery holds tannage and colour constant between lots; a trader often cannot.

Directly from an origin tannery that runs chrome-free tannages in-house — not from a trader reselling mixed stock, because the compliance paperwork has to originate where the leather was tanned. Demand is no longer a niche: the leather chemicals market is forecast to grow from $11.0bn in 2025 to $15.7bn by 2031, driven largely by the shift away from chrome-based tanning (Mordor Intelligence, 2026), and brands currently pay 15–25% premiums for verified non-chrome materials — a premium that only holds when the claim is documented.

Is chrome-tanned leather toxic?
No. Chrome tanning uses chromium(III), which is stable and not the banned hexavalent chrome-VI. A well-run tannery does not produce chrome-VI. The concern people raise is usually about poorly managed effluent, not the finished leather itself.

No. Vegetable tanning is one type of chrome-free tannage, but chrome-free also includes glutaraldehyde and other syntan systems. All vegetable-tanned leather is chrome-free; not all chrome-free leather is vegetable-tanned.
How do I verify a chrome-free tanned leather claim?
Ask the tannery for the tannage specification (metal-free vs chrome-free vs low-chrome), a third-party lab report confirming total chromium below detection limits, and its LWG audit rating. An origin tannery can document all three; a trader usually cannot.
Does chrome-free leather cost more?
Usually yes. The process is more demanding and runs are smaller, and verified non-chrome materials currently command premiums of around 15–25% at brand level. The gap narrows on volume programs agreed directly with the origin tannery rather than through intermediaries.
