Custom leather coasters for hotels and bars: 3 builds, 160+ finishes, your logo

A coaster sits under a wet glass a dozen times a night. Most leather coasters sold to bars are PU or bonded leather, which is why they curl and peel within a season. Here is how a tannery-made coaster programme works.

A guide by TL San Martín, a tannery of origin in Elda (Alicante, Spain) since 1995, LWG Gold certified under the Leather Manufacturer standard.

Custom leather coasters for a hotel or bar are built on one of three standard constructions — single thick slab, double layer, or leather over a core — and personalised in two places: the finish and the logo. At TL San Martín the leather is tanned in our own tannery in Elda, in any of 160+ finishes; the logo is debossed, foiled or laser-engraved. Standard builds make boutique runs viable and scale to chains.

Why do most "leather" coasters fail in a bar?

Search for leather coasters with a logo and most of what comes back is promotional-goods suppliers and overseas factories offering "PU or genuine leather" in the same listing, often alongside a "recycled leather" option. Recycled leather is bonded leather: leather fibre bound together with a polymer. On a coaster it fails in a predictable way. Condensation sits on the surface, works into the cut edge, and the layers start to lift and curl. PU fails differently: the coating cracks along the edge where glasses are set down and picked up.

We are a tannery. We tan and finish the leather in Elda, Spain, and make the coasters from it. For a hotel, bar or restaurant group, three things change. You choose from a real finish library, not a three-colour swatch card. The coasters can come from the same batch as your custom leather menu covers and check presenters, so the bar and the restaurant match. And the answer to "what is this made of?" is one line. The full material comparison is in genuine leather vs PU for hotel amenities.

What are the three standard builds?

Standardising the construction is what makes a short run affordable. The cutting dies and the process already exist, so a boutique bar does not pay for development. You personalise the leather and the logo, not the build.

Build Construction Total thickness Best for
1 · Single slabOne piece of thick leather, edges painted and burnished3–4 mmBars and lounges: heavy, sits flat, no layers to separate
2 · Double layerFinished leather top bonded to a leather base, edge-painted or stitched3–4 mmRestaurants and rooms: two finishes or colours, clean underside
3 · Leather over coreLeather top over a rigid core with a non-slip base4–5 mmTerraces, minibars, polished tables where sliding is the issue

Formats follow the bar standard: round Ø 100 mm or square 100 × 100 mm, roughly the 4-inch coaster the trade uses everywhere. A matching holder is optional and is where a metal plate makes sense (see below).

Which finish survives a wet glass?

Any of our 160+ finishes can go on any build. What matters on a coaster is how the finish behaves under condensation, spilled spirits, citrus and cleaning, night after night.

Edges matter as much as the face. A sealed, painted edge keeps water out of the cut; an unsealed edge is where every coaster starts to fail. Ask for rub fastness (ISO 11640) on your chosen finish, in writing, and test swatches with your own glassware and cleaning product. You can request samples before deciding.

Deboss, foil, laser or metal plate: where should the logo go?

Method On a coaster Watch out for
Blind debossThe natural choice: tonal, durable, never wears offVery fine lines can fill in — keep the artwork bold
Foil debossGold or silver crest, classic barsThe glass base rubs the centre — place the logo off-centre or near the rim
Laser engravingDetailed logos, tonal markMark colour depends on the finish; test on yours
Metal plateNot on the coaster face — a glass would rock on itPut the plate on the holder instead

A deboss needs a one-off die that is reused on every reorder. For a group, the same die can mark coasters, menu covers and check presenters, so one investment brands the whole table.

How many coasters does a boutique hotel order, and how many does a chain?

Three runs, one build:

Boutique hotel or bar Hotel group Luxury chain
Run per model100–300300–1,0001,000+
LeatherAny of 160+ finishesSameSame, or an exclusive colour on its own batch
Batch reservation—Recommended12–24 months, so replacements match

A 60-room boutique hotel typically needs two coasters per room plus the bar, lounge and terrace — a run of 200–300 lands comfortably in the boutique tier, with 5–10 % kept back for losses. Coasters disappear faster than any other piece on the table, so the reserved batch matters more here than on menu covers: replacements should match the coasters still in service. Below the boutique run, projects are better served through the Business Board, where small leather-goods workshops publish capacity.

For the sommelier side of the same table, see custom leather wine list covers — same batch, same deboss die.

Coasters close the bar set; for the room set — valet tray, directory, amenity tray — see leather valet trays for hotels and leather amenities for luxury hotels.

Do leather coasters work on cruise ships and yachts?

Yes, with the same adjustment as any leather on board: humidity and salt air. Choose a pigmented, top-coated finish, fully sealed edges and build 1 or 3 — a single slab or a core with a non-slip base, which also matters when the deck moves. For the interior of the same vessel, see leather for superyacht interiors.

Frequently asked questions

What is the minimum order for custom leather coasters?

On a standard build, runs start at 100 pieces per model for a boutique hotel or bar. Hotel groups typically order 300–1,000 per model and chains 1,000 or more, with the leather batch reserved for 12–24 months so replacements match.

Do leather coasters absorb water?

A pigmented, top-coated finish does not: water sits on the surface and wipes off. Unfinished or aniline leather does absorb and marks. The cut edge is the weak point, which is why it is painted and sealed.

Can the coasters match our menu covers?

Yes. Choose the same finish from our library and we cut coasters, menu covers and check presenters from the same batch, so colour matches across the bar and the restaurant.

Is bonded or "recycled" leather a cheaper alternative?

It is cheaper on day one. On a coaster, condensation reaches the cut edge and bonded leather tends to delaminate and curl. Ask any supplier to state the material in writing.
