Custom leather door hangers for hotels: do not disturb, 3 patterns, your logo
The do-not-disturb sign is handled by every guest and every housekeeper, every day. Most leather versions sold to hotels are bonded leather or PU. Here is how a tannery-made door hanger programme works, from a boutique hotel to a chain.
A guide by TL San Martín, a tannery of origin in Elda (Alicante, Spain) since 1995, LWG Gold certified under the Leather Manufacturer standard.
A custom leather door hanger for a hotel is built on one of three standard patterns — a single thick slab with a handle slot, a stitched double-sided hanger, or a strap-and-tag hanger — and personalised in the finish, the message and the logo. At TL San Martín the leather is tanned in our own tannery in Elda, in any of 160+ finishes. Standard patterns make a boutique run viable and scale to a chain.
Why do most leather door hangers look tired after one season?
Search for a leather do-not-disturb sign for a hotel and most of what comes back is hospitality suppliers selling printed plastic in cases of 100, plus a handful of "leather" versions. Read the specification of those and the material is often bonded leather — leather fibre ground up and bound with a polymer — or PU. On a door hanger both fail in the same place: the handle slot. Every time the hanger goes on and comes off the lever, the cut edge of the slot takes the load. Bonded leather starts to fray and split there; PU cracks along the bend.
We are a tannery. We tan and finish the leather in Elda, Spain, and make the hangers from it. That changes three things for a hotel. You choose from a real finish library, not a three-colour card. The hangers can be cut from the same batch as the guest room directory and the valet tray, so the room reads as one set. And when a guest asks what it is made of, the answer is one line. The full material comparison is in genuine leather vs PU for hotel amenities.
What are the three standard patterns?
Standardising the pattern is what makes a short run affordable: the cutting die and the process already exist, so a boutique hotel does not pay for development. You personalise the leather, the wording and the logo — not the construction.
| Pattern | Construction | Thickness | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 · Single slab | One piece of firm leather with a die-cut handle slot; edges painted and burnished | 3–4 mm | Lever handles; heavy, hangs flat, nothing to come apart |
| 2 · Double-sided | Two finished layers bonded and stitched, one message per side | 2 × 1.4–1.8 mm | "Do not disturb" on one side, "Please make up room" on the other |
| 3 · Strap and tag | Leather strap loop with a stitched or riveted tag | Strap 2.5–3 mm, tag 2–3 mm | Knob handles, electronic lock handles, any door where a slot will not fit |
Send us one photo of your door handle with a measurement before you choose. The slot in pattern 1 has to clear the lever and the lock housing; if it does not, pattern 3 solves it without changing anything else.
Door hangers close the room set. For the full list of what a property orders in leather, see leather amenities for luxury hotels; for the restaurant side of the same hotel, start with custom leather menu covers.
Which finishes survive a housekeeping cart?
We offer 160+ finishes from the San Martín library on any of the three patterns. A door hanger is handled by guests and housekeepers several times a day and wiped down between stays, so the rule is the same as for anything on a hotel corridor:
- Choose: pigmented leather with a protective top-coat. It wipes clean with a damp cloth and mild detergent and holds colour under corridor lighting.
- Avoid: nubuck, suede and pure aniline. They look beautiful in a showroom and mark with the first hand that touches them.
- Edges: painted and sealed, never left raw. The edge is what a guest sees when the hanger swings.
Colour can be matched to your brand standard, and the batch can be reserved so replacements match the hangers still on the doors.
Deboss, foil or metal plate: how should the message and logo go on?
A door hanger carries two things: the message and the brand. They do not have to use the same method.
| Method | Look | Best for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Blind deboss | Pressed into the leather, no colour | The logo, quiet luxury | Low contrast at a distance: not ideal on its own for the message |
| Foil deboss | Gold, silver or colour in the impression | The message, legible from the corridor | Foil wears where fingers grip: keep it away from the slot |
| Laser engraving | Burnt, tonal mark | Detailed logos, multilingual text | The mark's colour depends on the finish: test on yours |
| Metal plate | Small brass or plated badge, riveted | Chains with a brand standard | Fix it on the side facing the room so it does not knock the door |
The cost logic is simple: a deboss or foil die is a one-off, reused on every reorder. A chain operating in several languages keeps one pattern and one logo die and changes only the message die per language.
How many hangers does a boutique hotel need, and how many does a chain?
Three runs, one pattern:
| Boutique hotel | Hotel group | Luxury chain | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Run per model | 100–300 | 300–1,000 | 1,000+ |
| Leather | Any of 160+ finishes | Same | Same, or an exclusive colour on its own batch |
| Batch reservation | Optional | Recommended | 12–24 months, so reorders match |
A 60-key boutique hotel needs one hanger per door plus spares — door hangers walk out in suitcases, so plan 10–15 % above the key count. That lands in the boutique tier. The same pattern then serves the group when it opens its second property. Below the boutique run, projects are better served through the Business Board, where small leather-goods workshops publish capacity.
Do leather door hangers work on cruise ships?
Yes, with the same adjustment as any leather on board: humidity and salt air. Choose a pigmented, top-coated finish, fully sealed edges and plated or stainless rivets if you use pattern 3 or a metal plate. Cabin doors often carry electronic locks with short handles, which makes the strap-and-tag pattern the usual choice. For the interior of the same vessel, see leather for superyacht interiors.

Frequently asked questions
What is the minimum order for custom leather door hangers?
On a standard pattern, runs start at 100 pieces per model for a boutique hotel. Hotel groups typically order 300–1,000 per model and chains 1,000 or more, with the leather batch reserved for 12–24 months so replacements match.
Can the hanger have a different message on each side?
Yes. Pattern 2 is built for it: two finished layers stitched together, "Do not disturb" on one side and "Please make up room" on the other, each foiled or debossed separately.
Is bonded or "recycled" leather a cheaper alternative?
Cheaper on day one. On a door hanger the slot takes the wear, and bonded leather tends to fray and split there within a season. Ask any supplier to state the material in writing.
Can we see the leather before we commit?
Yes. Request samples of the finishes you are considering and test them against your door, your corridor light and your cleaning products.
